NPR Recaps 9 Episodes Devoted to the Holiday Chandler Bing Hates Most
It’s that time of year again and Nonprofit Resources is gearing up for the holiday season! As Turkey Day approaches, who better to kick-off with than your favorite Central Perk six?! While this might be Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, Rachel & Ross’s first debut on NPR’s blog, they’ve been serving up some mean Thanksgiving episodes 9 out of 10 seasons the show aired from 1994 – 2003. So while your turkey bastes, stuffing bakes, potatoes whip, and trifle marinates – throw on some Friends and indulge in some of the best scenes the show has to offer.
SEASON 1 – The One Where Underdog Gets Away (1994)
In this first Friends Thanksgiving, Monica and Ross are forced to celebrate the holiday on their own because their parents went away on a trip. Joey’s family thinks he has a disease because he appeared in an ad campaign. Rachel can’t afford a ticket to Vail. Chandler doesn’t eat Thanksgiving food because of bad family memories. Luckily, unfortunate circumstances bring them all together.
SEASON 3 – The One with the Football (1996)
It’s Thanksgiving, so everyone’s over for Monica’s festive meal. After watching pros on TV, they decide to have a friendly American Football game in the park, despite the fact the Geller parents forbade Ross and Monica to play each-other ever again after years of vicious rivalry for the ‘Geller Cup’. Rachel and Phoebe prove worse than worthless. Joey and Chandler are totally absorbed by Margha, a Dutch girl who stands by to watch the game unravel.
SEASON 4 – The One with Chandler in a Box (1997)
After kissing Kathy while she was still Joey’s girlfriend, Chandler tries to earn Joey’s forgiveness by lying in a wooden box for six hours. Monica accidentally gets ice in her eye and her doctor turns out to be her previous boyfriend’s cute and newly single son, Timothy. Ross is upset with Rachel because he discovers she exchanges gifts.
SEASON 5 – The One with All the Thanksgivings (1998)
Everyone is stuffed after another one of Monica’s legendary dinners, so they lay low to digest and reminisce about their worst Thanksgivings. We learn why Chandler hates the holiday. Monica avoids re-living the year she accidentally cut Chandler’s toe off. And of course, we see both Monica and Joey with a turkey stuck on their heads.
SEASON 6 – The One Where Ross Got High (1999)
Rachel puts beef in the trifle after the cookbook pages get stuck together with shepherd’s pie. Phoebe briefly nurses a crush on Monica’s dad, Jack. Ross has to admit to his parents that he was the one in college who smoked pot that one time, not Chandler, whom they hate because they thought he smoked pot in college that one time.
SEASON 7 – The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs (2000)
Phoebe’s trying to sneak a dog around because Chandler doesn’t just hate Thanksgiving, he hates dogs, too. Ross won’t allow himself to have a plate of Thanksgiving food until he can name all 50 states from memory, and Rachel has relationship drama with her assistant at Ralph Lauren, Tag.
SEASON 8 – The One with the Rumor (2001)
Monica invites an old friend from high school to Thanksgiving dinner. Will, who was an even bigger dork than Ross back in the day, now is insanely attractive. Will reveals that because Rachel used to be so mean to him, he was the one who started a rumor about her back in the day. Also, Ross helped spread the rumor which causes a rift between him and Rachel. Joey tries to eat an entire turkey by himself.
SEASON 9 – The One with Rachel’s Other Sister (2002)
Rachel’s obnoxious sister, Amy, invites herself to Thanksgiving. The conversation turns to who would get custody of baby Emma if Rachel and Ross died. Of course, they’ve already picked the most logical and obvious godparents: Chandler and Monica. Amy isn’t happy with that decision, but then Chandler also gets mad because he learns that if Monica died after Ross and Rachel, then Jack and Judy Geller get Emma instead of him alone.
SEASON 10 – The One with the Late Thanksgiving (2003)
Monica and Chandler don’t even want to host Thanksgiving, but Phoebe convinces them that they have to. Thanksgiving-food-hating Chandler makes a big breakthrough by preparing cranberry sauce. Rachel and Phoebe enter Emma in a baby beauty pageant and Ross and Joey hit a hockey game … which makes them all late for dinner. Monica and Chandler are angry about their friends’ absence enough to lock everybody out of the apartment.
