When you think February, you think flowers, candy, and HEARTS! This February celebrates the 57th consecutive American Heart Month, a month dedicated to promoting heart health. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death nationwide, according to the American Heart Association, the nation’s largest nonprofit association dedicated to the fight against heart disease.
Heart disease can affect men, women, and children. In fact, 1 in 110 babies are born with a congenital heart defect and heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. Poor eating habits, over consumption of alcohol, and stress, especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic, make heart health awareness more important than ever.
Here are 10 ways to have a healthy heart according to the AHA:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Control blood sugar & cholesterol
- Treat high blood pressure
- Eat a healthy diet
- Don’t smoke
- Exercise regularly
- Get regular heart checkups
